Sometimes free products can be as useful, or as good as non free products. Here are some links to quality free products we like and use.
AntiVirus - AntiSpyware - AntiMalware
Spybot Search & Destroy is a very good free antispyware as long as you remember to update it regularly and to immunize your computer after each update.
Ad-Aware is also a good antispyware program that used to be free. Unfortunately, the company now requires free users to fulfill an online offer. As far as we are concerned, that does not allow this product to qualify as free any more.
AVG is an excellent free antimalware. Even with the free version you have the ability to schedule updates and scans. Lately, the free version seems to have some problems with the updates and often reports failure. Opening the Control Center and forcing an update usually fixes the problem. Anti Spam
Mailwasher is one of the best, maybe even THE best free antispam software.
Firewalls
Zone Alarm offer a very good free firewall. It may not have as many features as the Pro version, but you can't beat the price 
Internet Surfing and Email
Firefox is a completely free web browser that does not have the same security problems as Internet Explorer.
Mozilla's Thunderbird is a completely free E-mail software that is more secure than Outlook Express.
Wireless Network Security
AirSnare is a free tool for Wireless Network Intrusion Detection. It will alert you to unfriendly MAC addresses on your network and will also alert you to DHCP requests taking place. If AirSnare detects an unfriendly MAC address it allows you to track the intruder. It does require a somewhat high level of technological knowledge.
